You’re ready to build a pool in your backyard, but you’re not sure what size or type is right for your family. That’s a big decision—and it can feel overwhelming. You want something that looks great, fits your yard, and keeps everyone happy for years to come.
There are many pool styles to choose from, and each one has its own ideal size and depth. The best pool for your home depends on your space, lifestyle, and budget. Whether you want a quiet place to relax, a splash zone for the kids, or a lap lane to swim every morning, this guide will help you understand your options so you can feel confident about your decision.
At J Designs, we know no two families—and no two backyards—are the same. With over 24 years of experience designing custom shotcrete pools in Los Angeles, we’ve built pools for everyone from small courtyards to large resort-style spaces. Below, we break down the most popular types of pools, their typical dimensions, and their ideal depth ranges.
Typical Size: 20–22.5 ft long × 10 ft wide
Ideal Depth: 3 ft to 4.5 ft
Spools are great for small yards or people who want both a spa and a pool in one. With built-in swim jets, they’re perfect for relaxing, soaking, or staying active. Add a heater, jets, and benches to customize it for comfort or fitness.
Typical Size: 24 ft long × 12 ft wide
Ideal Depth: 3 ft to 5 ft
Cocktail pools are designed for chilling out with a drink in hand. They’re usually shallow—between 3 and 5 feet deep—making them safe for guests and easy to maintain. They’re perfect for small yards and intimate entertaining spaces.
Typical Size: 28 ft long × 14 ft wide (or custom freeform)
Ideal Depth: 3 ft shallow end, 5 ft deep end
Play pools are the most popular choice for families. They’re designed for fun—swimming, floating, and water games. Most have a gentle slope from 3 feet to 5 feet deep, making them great for kids and adults. Deck jets or water features are great add-ons for these.
Typical Size: Larger than play pools, 34' Long x 24' Wide+ (Safety restrictions must be observed per ANSI/APSP/ICC/ISPSC). Ask your builder for details.
Ideal Depth: 8.5 ft to 10 ft in deep end
If you want a diving board or jump rock, you need a diving pool. These pools must meet minimum depth rules (at least 8 feet) for safety. Diving pools take up more space and cost more to build and maintain, but they’re great for families who love action-packed pool time.
Typical Size: 45–75 ft long × 8–10 ft wide
Ideal Depth: 4 ft to 5 ft
Lap pools are built for swimmers and athletes. They’re long, narrow, and straight—perfect for exercise. The ideal depth is 4 to 5 feet, deep enough to swim comfortably without wasting energy or heat.
We measure your space and consider how your pool will integrate with patios, gardens, and lounge areas. Design is about more than just the pool—it’s about how everything works together.
In Los Angeles, setback regulations limit where you can build your pool:
Minimum 5 feet from side and rear property lines
Minimum 5 feet from your home or any other structure
Pool equipment like pumps and filters must also be 5 feet from property lines (County of LA)
Pools deeper than 24 inches require a fence with a self-closing, lockable gate
Shallow ends can’t exceed 3.5 feet, and diving areas must be at least 8 feet deep
These codes help ensure safety and city approval—our team will walk you through all requirements.
Your decisions on size and depth should be guided by how you’ll use your pool—whether for lounging, playing, swimming laps, or entertaining.
Bigger pools usually cost more to install and maintain. We'll help you get the features you want while staying within budget.
Beyond setbacks and depth, zoning and HOA rules may also affect design. We handle permitting and code compliance so you can focus on the fun stuff.
Your pool doesn’t have to stand alone—it can be the centerpiece of a full outdoor living space. Consider adding built-in features that create an all-day, all-season backyard experience.
