Tips to Choose the Right Builder

Choosing the right builder is the most critical decision you will make regarding your swimming pool construction, so take your time, ask questions, and do your research.

It can make all the difference between a smooth and great experience and a nightmare.

Here are some things to consider while choosing a swimming pool builder:

  • First, make sure your contractor is licensed. Most licensed contractors are honest, dependable, hardworking, and financially responsible.

  • Ask for references. Any respectable swimming pool contractor will be able to give you a list of references in your area, and you might ask them to provide you with a tour of one or two projects. After all, if you were pleased with your contractor, you wouldn't mind showing off your pool too!

  • Don't rush your decision. Instead, ask for at least three bids and make sure you can compare the project's scope of work and specifications.

  • If you are dealing with the salesman, make sure to have all the person's information that will be dealing with your pool daily. For example, is the owner of the company easily reached?

  • Have the salesman write down any promises that will affect the construction of your pool. Remember, everything has to be in writing.

  • Is the cost of permits included in the contract? Who is responsible for obtaining permits? Even when you are not doing major construction on your property, the swimming pool project has to have its permits, and it's essential to clarify who will be responsible for the cost and obtaining them.

  • Read all the written materials given to you before you sign anything, so you are sure of what you are getting into. According to California's Contractors Board, you are entitled to cancel your contract up to 3 days after you have signed it.

  • Do they have a website? Social Media? Are they willing to inform you and respond to your inquiries?

  • Are they members of any association? Being part of an association helps builders continue with their education and be familiar with industry standards.

Price can be a big decision factor, but construction prices are the same in your area for all contractors, so don’t make your decision just on price, the differences might not be substantial from one builder to another, choose the builder that you feel the most comfortable working with.

Wishing you the best on your pool project!
