A Facelift Can Make All the Difference:

If your pool has seen better days, but the structure itself is still sound, you may be the perfect candidate for a pool remodel. This process gives new life to pools with worn plaster, cracked tile, or outdated materials—without needing full reconstruction.

The First Step: Drain SafelyPlaster Vertical Blog Visual

Before we start, we always check for hydrostatic pressure under the pool. If water is trapped beneath the shell, draining too soon can cause the entire structure to lift out of the ground or shift—a nightmare scenario. That’s why prevention is key. A trained pool contractor or remodel professional can safely detect and relieve this pressure, protecting your pool.

Step 2: Out with the Old (Plaster)

In the past, plaster was removed by chipping, a harsh and invasive method that often left deep gouges in the concrete shell and even exposed rebar—something you absolutely want to avoid.

Today, we use a much safer, more advanced method: Hydroblasting. This technique uses high-pressure water—up to 40,000 psi—to remove just the right amount of the old plaster. What’s left behind is a perfectly roughened surface that new plaster can bond to, the way it’s meant to. Since modern pool finishes are cementitious (cement-based), a strong, clean bond is critical for durability.

Step 3: Upgrading to Code

A remodel is the perfect time to update your pool’s mechanical and safety systems:

  • Dual drains are required in all pools and spas to prevent entrapment hazards.stonescape-2

  • Anti-entrapment grates must be VGB-compliant (Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act).

  • Lighting systems should be tested for proper function and have a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interruptor) for safety.

  • Fences and gates should meet local safety regulations —many older ones do not.

  • Pool pump and filter may also need replacement to stay up to date and energy efficient

Don’t overlook these critical updates—they can prevent accidents and ensure your pool passes inspection.

Step 4: Don’t Forget the Tile, Coping... and Lights!

While you’re at it, consider refreshing the tile and coping. These surfaces take a beating from the sun, water, and time, and replacing them can elevate the entire look of your poolIt’s also a good opportunity to check out and upgrade to LED pool lights, as they often need rewiring or replacement during a remodel.

Fact: Using your new LED light for 6 hours per day will save you, on average, $170 per year per light. ($0.25/kWh, California average)

Pro Tip: Electrical upgrades ensure your pool is safe and your equipment is also protected with a GFCI, outdoor switch.

Step 5: Choosing Your New Pool Finish

As part of your remodel, plaster is the final finish coat that gives your pool its smooth surface and color. Today’s pool finishes go beyond standard white plaster—a wide variety of textures, colors, and pebbles (also known as aggregates) can elevate your pool's entire look and feel. At J Designs, we specialize in pool remodels and can help you choose the best finishes.

A pool remodel is more than just a makeover—it’s a chance to enhance safety, efficiency, and beauty, all while protecting your investment. If you’re ready to dive into a more innovative, stronger, and better-looking pool, we’re here to help guide you every step.
