Designing a pool can feel overwhelming. With so many shapes, styles, and features to consider, it’s hard to know where to begin. At J Designs, we’ve simplified everything into a clear, two-phase process that takes your backyard vision and transforms it into a custom pool design you’ll love.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly what to expect in each phase, from your first consultation to seeing your pool in 3D so you can feel confident every step of the way.
The process begins with an in-person discovery meeting. This is where our designer sits down with you to explore your vision, review the key elements you’d like included, and discuss any challenges or unique conditions of your property.
During this meeting, we will also bring documents from similar past projects. These examples provide a clear picture of what we deliver when hired to complete a comprehensive pool design — from sketches to detailed plans.
This discovery meeting serves as both a home visit and a meeting. By seeing your property firsthand, our designer can gain a better understanding of the space and how to integrate a pool that feels natural and functional. From architectural details to backyard layout, these observations help us guide your design in the right direction.
“There’s a lot of observation that we do at that point. A lot of the clients are not aware that I am noticing, I am looking, and taking notes.” – JC Escudero, Lead Designer.
Following this meeting, we’ll send you a Design Agreement. Once you approve it and give us the green light, we’ll provide a detailed questionnaire. This allows you to share additional preferences and features you’d like, helping us refine your pool design even further.
Once you’re satisfied with the initial direction, we proceed to the Design Agreement. This includes:
This agreement makes sure that you and our team are aligned before moving forward.
One of the most exciting steps is seeing your pool design transformed into a 3D digital model. We even offer virtual walkthroughs a short “movie” of your future backyard that helps you visualize how everything will look in real life.
You’ll have the option to share these visuals privately or even show friends and family.
“It’s a little movie of their backyard. It will give them perception, and they will get to understand the more finalized concept.” – JC Escudero
Printed plans mark the completion of the design process. These detailed documents include:
They are essential for construction, permitting, and importantly determining cost. With precise measurements in hand, we can provide you with a clear estimate of materials and the overall budget.
If the early sketch was the “bones” of your pool, the printed plans are the “nervous system” bringing every detail to life.
How long does the pool design process take?
Most designs take 2–4 weeks, depending on their complexity and the number of revisions.
Do I need to know exactly what I want before starting?
Not at all. Many of our clients come to us with just an idea, and we help shape it into a design.
What if I change my mind about features?
That’s normal! The early sketch and concept phases are meant for collaboration and adjustments.
Can you design pools for small or unique backyards?
Yes. Our designers specialize in creating custom solutions for all shapes and sizes of outdoor spaces.
How much does pool design cost?
Our design fees typically range between $3,500 and $5,500+. Extensive projects or designs that include additional custom water features may require a tailored pricing structure. We’ll review costs with you up front so there are no surprises. For more details on overall project budgets, see our guide: How Much Does It Cost to Build a Pool?
